Imagine a vineyard within the city. It’s here in Adelaide (!). And it’s the location of one of the most expensive wines of the country. Penfolds’ Magill Estate is not only a winery, but also the name of the famous Magill Estate Shiraz, that goes for more than $ 100 per bottle in the shops. Established in 1844, only 8 years after Adelaide was colonised by the British, this estate was once huge and outside the city centre, but now only limited to a few hectares, surrounded by suburbs. Despite urbanisation, the wine that is produced on site, is of superb quality. It houses one of South Australia’s best restaurants, and there is also an impressive wine cellar that has the whole collection of Penfolds Grange Hermitage wines. This is without doubt the best wine in Australia, and will cost you $ 700 a bottle for the recent years, but expect to pay towards $ 10,000 for 1960s or 1970s editions. We did a one hour heritage tour throughout the historic buildings and cellars, followed by an extensive wine tasting. And again… bought a few boxes (of more modest priced wines !) to take home.
