Welcome to South Australia ! We cross the border just after 09h00, half an hour after we left Broken Hill. Apart from a sign and a ‘border cafe’, there is nothing but outback. Further west, it keeps empty on the road with hardly any traffic to the Flinders Ranges. January is usually not tourist season for the Flinders as it can be pretty hot (> 40 C), but for the next 3 days they predict one of those (in)famous South Australian polar winds from the south. That means chilly in Adelaide, but comfortable in the Flinders. It will be around 25 C during the day and 12 C at night; almost winter temperatures for this area. Tomorrow I will tell you more about the Flinders Ranges itself.
Today’s trip from Broken Hill to Flinders Ranges, nearly 450 kms
The New South Wales – South Australian border is only 45 kms west of Broken Hill
Panorama of the border, that consists of a sign and one cafe. Click on the photo to see enlarged !
Old border signage with the distance still in miles (!), so it must be pre-1974 (see this link)
Looking back (these distances are in kilometres); a long way from home !
Aerial view of Wilpena Pound (in the Flinders Ranges) and Rawnsley Park Station in the front. This is where we will stay for the next 3 days.
The local population is welcoming us
Our eco villa ! Fully carbon neutral, with straw bale walls to keep the temperature inside pretty constant, rainwater and the use of only natural and local materials. For the rest, it’s very luxurious !
Marit will show you around in our eco villa
